Extension of Sudan Temporary Measures

The extension of temporary measures for Sudan, as of March 25, 2025

Canada has extended its temporary immigration measures for Sudanese nationals due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan. These measures, initially introduced to provide humanitarian support, have been prolonged until October 27, 2025. The extension allows Sudanese nationals currently in Canada to:

  • Extend their stay or change their status (e.g., as visitors, students, or temporary workers) without application fees. This includes applying for visitor records to extend visitor status or switching to work or study permits.

  • Access open work permits at no cost, enabling them to work in Canada and support themselves with greater flexibility during their temporary stay.

These measures apply to Sudanese nationals already in Canada who are unable to return home due to the volatile situation in Sudan, which began escalating on April 15, 2023. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) continues to prioritize processing applications for those affected, including:

  • Fee waivers for extending temporary resident status or changing streams (visitor, student, or worker).

  • Maintained status provisions, meaning individuals can legally remain in Canada while awaiting decisions on their extension applications, provided they apply before their current status expires.

Additionally, Canada has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Sudanese individuals through other immigration pathways, though this update focuses solely on the temporary measures extension. For procedural details, such as applying online or via paper applications, individuals are encouraged to use the IRCC’s crisis web form or mail applications to the Case Processing Centre in Edmonton, including the code “SD2023” to ensure fee exemptions are recognized.

This extension reflects Canada’s ongoing humanitarian stance, offering continued safety and stability for Sudanese nationals in the country amidst the persistent crisis in Sudan.
